The first step in the application process is to fill out the SJTU application system: http://isc.sjtu.edu.cn/EN/Default.aspx, by clicking on the "Apply Online" button at right. You will first need to register on the application system before you can complete and submit your application.

Dissertation

All MBA students are required to finish a dissertation after the completion of all courses.

 

Degree and Certificates

Degree candidates who have obtained all the credits of compulsory courses,10 finance elective credits and have finished a dissertation as required will be awarded the Shanghai Jiao Tong University MBA degree and graduation diploma.

 

Tuition Fee

Full time MBA program tuition fee is RMB 308,000, and the part-time MBA program tuition fee is RMB 408,000. Tuition fee will be paid in two annual installments.

FAQs

Q: Is working experience required to apply?

A: Yes, applicants must have three years of work experience by the start of classes in September. Only work experience AFTER the applicant’s undergraduate graduation date can be counted.

 

Q: How many intakes are there every year for MBA programs?

A: We have one intake every year in September.

 

Q: Is the GMAT required? How about IELTS/TOEFL?

A: A GMAT is required for all MBA applicants. Scores of 640 and higher are preferred, with scholarships starting for applicants with scores of 640 and higher. An IELTS or TOEFL English score is also required for students from non-native English speaking countries. However, if the applicants have received their schooling in English, the English test requirement is waived.

 

Q: How are applicants evaluated?   

A: We take the following into account: each student’s GMAT and IELTS/TOEFL English scores, undergraduate transcripts, professional background, extracurricular activities, interview evaluations, recommendation letters, and essay.

 

Q: What will the interview be like?

A: Interviews are held on the SAIF campus. Typically there are 2-3 interviewers present to conduct the interview, as well as admissions staff. Interviews last for about 60 minutes, and topics that are covered include schooling and professional background, current market, career aspirations, reasons for studying in Shanghai at SAIF, as well as specific questions raised based on the applicant’s resume, transcript, test scores, essay, etc.

 

Q: Do I have to be present for the interview?

A: We encourage applicants to attend the interview in person. However, we conduct speakerphone interviews on the designated interview dates when applicants are not able to attend in person.

 

Q: What is the difference in the application process for Mainland Chinese, Taiwanese/Hong Kong/Macao, and International Applicants?

A: Mainland Chinese and Hong Kong/Macao/Taiwan students must take the National Entrance Exam, while Foreign Passport holders simply need to take the GMAT.

 

Q: Is scholarship funding available?

A: SAIF MBA offers a variety of scholarships as below:   

Admission Scholarship, which is merit-based are offered based on their background, interview performance and admission scores.

Continuing Scholarship, which is evaluated based on students’ academic performance and program participation during the study

School-level Scholarship: SJTU will also offer a few scholarships for the top students study at SAIF.

Specific Scholarship for Academic Competition: SAIF will offer the scholarship for students who rank high in the national-wide or international academic competition.

Q: Can I study in Chinese?

A: The Full Time MBA class is taught completely in English. However, if you are fluent in Chinese or have an HSK score of 6 or higher, you can apply for the part-time MBA programs, which are mainly taught in Mandarin.

Q: What career services do you provide for employment in Shanghai?

A: The SAIF Career Development Center works hard to connect international students with internships and full-time employment upon graduation. Students are encouraged to meet with the CDC staff to discuss employment preferences and their professional background.

Conversational Chinese skills are also very helpful for finding employment in China, as most companies list this as a pre-requisite. The CDC works with MNC’s and Chinese corporations in Shanghai, and hosts employer presentations and career fairs every semester.

 

Q: Can I study abroad during my MBA studies at SAIF?

A: Yes, you may choose to study abroad in any one of our 15 partner schools in leading universities around the world. This takes place during the third semester for 3-5 months.

Q: How much does tuition cost? When is it due?

A: The total tuition for two years is 308,000 RMB for full-time matriculation, and 408,000RMB for part-time matriculation. Successful applicants will receive a letter of acceptance after the interview, which also contains information about tuition payment deadlines. Typically, tuition must be paid within two months after the acceptance letter is issued. Tuition is paid in two installments, half for the first year, and half for the second.  

 

Q: Can you tell me about the class/curriculum structure?

A: It is a two-year program. In the first year, we have six-module compulsory courses consisting of orientation courses foundation course, finance-core courses, management core courses, soft power courses and international focus courses.  In the second year, students should accomplish at least 10 credits for electives and complete their final thesis. There are about 40 electives open for students to choose from, which are also divided into six tracks including: Capital Market track, Corporate Finance track, General Management Track, Practice of Finance track, Practice of Management track and Soft Power Development track.

The compulsory courses are held during daytime of the weekdays, while the electives are mostly held on weekends and weekday evenings.

 

Q: How many months do students have to write our thesis?

A: It takes about 6 months. The orientation for thesis writing will be held in September. Students are expected to accomplish all the content before the mid-April. The students are writing the thesis while taking the electives in the second academic year.

 

Q: Are there any breaks between classes? Is there a summer holiday/winter holiday?

A: Since SAIF MBA program is very intensive, there is no clear break between classes during the semester. Yet, there is a Spring Festival holiday for a month, from the middle of Jan. to mid-Feb., and a summer break for at least 6 weeks depending on the electives you choose.

 

Q: How many faculty members are there, and what percentage has higher degrees from International universities?

A: We boast a world-renowned faculty team. The faculty consists of about 21 Full-time professors and more than 30 special-term professors. 100% of the professors have PhD's from top international universities such as MIT, Stanford University, UC Berkeley, Wharton, etc. Most of our senior professors have got their tenure in the top North American or European business schools before joining SAIF.

 

Q: What kind of extracurricular activities does SAIF provide?

A: SAIF hosts frequent guest lecturers from industry leaders of financial or international corporations in Shanghai. We also have student-led clubs, regular trips to historical and cultural sites in China, intercollegiate sports competitions, and academic competitions.      Students often arrange informal trips in Shanghai and around China in their free time and between classes.

 

Q: How much does it cost to live in Shanghai?

A: Shanghai is the most expensive city in China, but living costs are still lower than most Western countries. Rent is about 4,000 RMB/month, and eating, transportation, and shopping cost much less than in Europe or America.  Budgeting 4,000/month (outside of rent) is enough to live a comfortable life in Shanghai.
